Ah, the excruciating hard work it took to ‘run’ nana’s kitchen/house. No appliances other than a Hoover, a Sunbeam mixture, a Frigidaire ‘icebox’ and a wringer washing machine were utilized to lighten the load. Just about everything ran on nana’s physical labor. And that equaled pure, and pure meant wholesome. Wholesome was governed by the church. The church begat the family and the family functioned within the community. And the church married, baptized and buried its congregation. A woman’s work was sacred and guarded by the church in partnership with the government. Everyone was pigeon-holed by life’s expected roles and one’s expectations were limited by gender. Ah, here’s to nana.
