I watched President Obama address congress last night and I must applaud his tenacity and ability to lighten up when the rhetoric called for it (did Nixon ever do this? I can’t recall – this reminds me – Nixon’s grandson wants to run for office – now here is a last name that inspires trust! Almost like the Bush or Cheney surnames! LOL) his smile and chuckle is so infectious. Talk about ease at the podium, talk about smooth delivery – ohhhhh, he uses a teleprompter instead of a stack of papers to shuffle through – should he have carried his laptop to the podium? And above all he doesn’t make up words and use dumb phrases like …
I especially liked the poke at Justice Alito, sitting like a king in his black judge robe, sitting amongst his fellow flock, sitting with a pinched, pouty-faced scowl, arms locked, announcing to the world his distaste for having to attend a political event, having to stay up late past his bedtime, having to be on display, having to rub elbows with common representatives and senators. Mouthing ‘Not true’ back at Obama and being caught by the TV cameras for the world to see – did he forget that Obama is a constitutional lawyer/professor? Did he forget that regular citizens can read the constitution and understand when their rights have been trampled – we don’t need Constitution for Dummies either!
And let us not forget Obama’s schooling on the facts: “So let me start the discussion of government spending by setting the record straight. At the beginning of the last decade, America had a budget surplus of over $200 billion. By the time I took office, we had a one year deficit of over $1 trillion and projected deficits of $8 trillion over the next decade. Most of this was the result of not paying for two wars, two tax cuts, and an expensive prescription drug program. On top of that, the effects of the recession put a $3 trillion hole in our budget. That was before I walked in the door.” As the cameras panned to Obama’s left it exposed all the sourpusses sitting on their hands, grumbling, looking up talking points on their blackberries, sharing Reader’s Digest jokes with their partners, repeating no,no,no no, no, no, in their heads. “No, grumble, mumble, humbug. Why – aren’t there enough poor houses for the unemployed? We can’t afford to spend money to create jobs, what is Obama thinking? Let them eat cake!”
Today’s conservative papers, polls and talking heads all called Obama’s address a big lie, but since they were so used to hearing lies for eight years and believing what they were told by their party planner Rush Limbaugh that they reacted in pain – truth can hurt when its stranger than fiction! As a treat I listened to Howie Carr on the way home from work, bash Martha Coakley for running a weak campaign by using Kerrie and Joe Kennedy quotes – I didn’t know the man could quote a Kennedy without choking back bile. He also couldn’t help bashing Obama’s big lies either by airing caller’s ignorant complaints. This is about the time I learned that Scott Brown declared that the Republicans can’t count on his vote in congress! I heard the disbelief all the way from D.C. They were already calling Brown the next incumbent president! What a hoot!
