1/21/2010: The Day Democracy Died

SCOTUS judges Kennedy, Scalia, Thomas, Roberts and Alito, all have a weird sense of humor, sense of timing, common sense, constitutional sense? So, let me get this right – I have to incorporate myself as a business to be heard in America now?

Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote the majority’s opinion:”Because speech is an essential mechanism of democracy — it is the means to hold officials accountable to the people — political speech must prevail against laws that would suppress it by design or inadvertence.”

In his dissent, Justice John Paul Stevens accused the majority of judicial activism and attacked the use of corporate personhood in the case: “The conceit that corporations must be treated identically to natural persons in the political sphere is not only inaccurate but also inadequate to justify the Court’s disposition of this case.” (AP, 1/21/10)

What defines free speech? $$$ (Corporate voice)

US Citizens 0            US Corporation 1           World Corporations 1

Who is celebrating? Corporations and Republicans (the party of NO & $$$)

Who are the losers? US Citizens (of any party) because we can’t afford to be heard!!!

At least corporations still have to disclose their contributions – why didn’t this pass muster? What about the right to privacy laws? While we are giving all of our rights to corporations why don’t we just give them everything? Next they will have the right to bare arms (organize their own militas), incorporate their own religions, vote and plead the fifth. I’m sure this is in the Federal Papers somewhere! Where is Paine when you need him?
