Oh, Rick Santorum, you poor, poor man, to have to go throughout life playing the fool instead of statesman, it is not only a waste of breath but a waste of brain matter. Whenever you speak at rallies, debates or on TV you put your foot in your mouth which is recorded for millions world wide to read/hear; with all your education you are a very small ignorant man. A man possessing 3 higher education degrees (Bachelors, M.B.A. and JD) is a hypocrite to call others with educational degrees SNOBS. It is also bad form to misquote others when the quote in question is on public record: “Everyone should have the opportunity to go to college.” Should – not must; a big difference as you were aware of when you spun the President’s quote during your off-the-cuff speech at a TeaParty rally. Perhaps you should have notes in front of you when you misspeak so freely – it will lower your corrections considerably.
Santorum, I have listed three quotes that might set your education and religious opinions straight: “Religion … is the opiate of the masses,” (Karl Marx, Critique of Hegel’s Philosophy of Right) and “A nation under a well regulated government, should permit none to remain uninstructed. It is monarchical and aristocratical government only that requires ignorance for its support.” (Thomas Paine, Rights of Man, 1792). “State churches that use government power to support themselves and force their views on persons of other faiths undermine all our civil rights. Moreover, state support of the church tends to make the clergy unresponsive to the people and leads to corruption within religion. Erecting the “wall of separation between church and state,” therefore, is absolutely essential in a free society.” (Thomas Jefferson, 1808). I think that these great philosophers should have a great impact on Santorum’s snobbery and religious pronouncements. Oh yes, and here is one more quote that wraps everything up succinctly – “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof…” (The First Amendment).
Now I realize mixing Marx, Paine, Jefferson and the 1st Amendment together may completely blow Santorum’s mind and plays right into his “indoctrinating colleges” but as he studied the law he was most likely introduced to philosophy and philosophers – some which he may have liked or dismissed, but nevertheless crossed his path; Santorum: please don’t destroy that path for other seekers. Education is power. Power to the people! Our country needs plumbers, senators, carpenters, mechanics, librarians, truck drivers, engineers, pilots, soldiers, educators, ministers, and presidents – all require education to be what they can be.
I guess I’m snob; I want all my students to have the opportunity to go to college.
